Adjustable benches: height, angles and storage

Start with flat height and the positions you use. Decline, wider pads and attachments can follow.

How we choose equipment About our buying links

Start with BodyIron’s Studio Utility FID for a practical Australian flat, incline and decline bench. BlackWing is worth the larger spend when its sliding seat, known pad dimensions and adjustment range solve a fit problem. Ironmaster’s removable seat and attachment options give it a different role in a small strength setup.

The shortlist

Check the pad height and width

Your feet need a useful position on the floor while your shoulders sit on the pad. Compare that setup with a bench you already use. BodyIron’s listing omits flat pad height and the seat gap, so those two measurements are the useful questions for World Fitness. The published 131 cm assembled height is not its flat pad height.

Pay for the adjustment you will use

BodyIron includes a leg stabiliser for decline work and lists a 280 kg bench capacity. Nighthawk is a 40 kg flat/incline alternative, with seven back positions from 0° to 85° and upright storage. AB-5200 offers a longer back pad, while its decline settings need the optional adjustable rear post. BlackWing includes decline adjustment.

Ironmaster has a different arrangement: the main pad tilts as one piece and a removable seat supports incline work. Its published capacity is 1,000 lb flat and 600 lb inclined or upright. The position matters when reading that rating.

Will the bench fit your rack?

  • Leave room for the bench feet around the rack’s rear crossmember and any cable attachment.
  • Allow a path from the rack to the dumbbell area. Wheels help, but you still move the full bench mass.
  • Use upright storage only on benches designed for it. A folding model needs clearance around bed rails or other obstructions.
  • Add the specific decline support, wider pad or attachment you want to the quote. Photographed accessories may be separate.
