Boxing bags, freestanding bases and bag stands
Compare a filled hanging bag with a freestanding model, then account for the support, movement space and missing accessories.
Choose the bag around the striking practice and installation your room can support. A hanging bag needs a suitable structural mount or stand; a freestanding model needs a filled base and clear floor space. Bag price alone does not describe a complete boxing station.

A hanging 5 ft bag supplied with rag filling, a 2 cm EVA lining and a mounting chain. The listed bag body is 155 cm tall and 35 cm across.

A hanging heavy bag transfers its weight and movement through chains or straps into the support. A freestanding bag transfers forces through a stem and base to the floor. Neither arrangement eliminates movement: a hanging bag swings, while a freestanding system can flex, rebound or shift according to its design and setup.
Match the striking area to the intended discipline. A longer hanging bag offers a different contact area from a small reflex target. A bag marketed for introductory fitness may also have different permitted use from one intended for sustained heavy-bag training. The product’s instructions matter more than a dramatic training photograph.
| Installation | Complete the purchase with | Space to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Hanging from a structure | Rated support, suitable fixings and installation | Chain drop, bag height, swing and surrounding footwork |
| Hanging from a freestanding stand | Compatible stand and its required ballast or fixings | Stand legs, loading pegs, bag swing and access |
| Freestanding bag and base | Specified sand or water filling and assembly | Base width, flex or rebound, and room to circle |

Filled bag and filled base mean different things
A pre-filled hanging bag arrives with its striking body loaded. An unfilled shell needs the maker’s specified filling process and material. A foam-filled freestanding bag can still have an empty base: the foam describes the striking surface, not the ballast keeping the unit upright.
Keep product mass, shipping mass and operating mass separate. SMAI’s 5 ft Triple Black is a pre-filled hanging bag with an approximate mass range. Everlast’s Powercore page gives gross shipping mass but does not establish its filled base mass. Do not invent that missing figure from a photograph or from another country’s model.
For a fillable base, check its volume, permitted material, filling and draining method, and whether it can be moved after setup. Water and sand are not interchangeable by mass for a given volume. Position the unit with a practical route for future relocation rather than assuming that freestanding means easy to carry.

Mounting and clearance
Plan the complete hanging height: support point, swivel or chain, bag body and the intended clearance beneath it. A catalogue bag height usually does not include your whole installation. Leave a clear movement area around the bag and check nearby walls, windows, benches and rack attachments.
A bracket rating does not establish the strength of the wall to which it is fixed. SMAI’s mounting instructions require a suitable load-bearing structure; the fixing method must suit that structure. A portable heavy-bag stand has its own bag-mass limit and may use separate weight plates for stability. Price and verify these parts together.
Inspect the connection hardware according to the maker’s instructions. Metal contact, straps and swivels can wear during repeated movement. A spare carabiner chosen only because it fits through a hole does not establish a suitable working-load rating.

The rest of the station
Gloves and hand wraps are normally separate from a bag-only purchase. Choose them for the intended bag work and hand fit, and obtain instruction on wrapping and striking technique. A bundle should list its glove size or weight rather than leaving the included pair unspecified.
Check the selected bag’s cleaning and environmental restrictions. Everlast does not recommend its Powercore for outdoor use, despite the appeal of moving a portable station onto a patio. Include bulky freight, installation or base filling and floor compatibility in the Australian delivered cost. This makes a comparison between two usable setups possible before either occupies the room.
